Chobe Game Lodge

About this hotel

General information

Chobe Game Lodge is the only permanent lodge inside Chobe National Park, set on the bank of the Chobe River. It was founded in 1973 as Botswana's first luxury safari lodge. Forty rooms and four suites are spread through gardens shaded by old mahogany trees, every one of them facing the river. Because the lodge sits within the park itself, its guests are the first out on safari in the morning and the last back at night.

The lodge is known for its guiding team made up entirely of professional women guides, the Chobe Angels, and for being one of the first in Botswana to switch to electric game-drive vehicles and boats, some of them solar powered. Grey water is treated and reused for irrigation, most waste is sorted and recycled, and more than two thirds of the staff are women. The lodge holds the highest level of Botswana's national ecotourism certification. Meals, drinks, daily safari activities and laundry are included.

Location

The lodge lies inside Chobe National Park, on the bank of the Chobe River and close to the town of Kasane in northern Botswana. It is easily reached via Kasane, as well as from neighbouring Victoria Falls.

Spa

Spa Kwa Maningi, whose name means "place of plenty", takes its cue from the Kalahari and works with local ingredients such as marula oil, African shea butter and rooibos. Signature treatments include the traditional African Ubuntu Massage, the restorative Baobab Bliss, the Kalahari Melon Facial with the antioxidants of the desert melon and the Serengeti Scrub, a body ritual using local herbs.

Sports & leisure

Life here revolves around the wildlife of the Chobe River, where animals from across the park come down to drink:

  • morning and afternoon game drives along the river in silent electric 4x4s, setting out as soon as the park opens and returning after sunset, often with a sundowner; expect large herds of elephant, buffalo, impala and giraffe, the occasional puku and, in the north of the park, lion, leopard and wild dog;
  • river safaris on four electric skimmer boats, three of them fully solar: up to 12 guests on adjustable deck chairs, a level deck for photography, and elephants at the water's edge, hippos and predators along the banks;
  • a 250-metre boardwalk along the river for watching wildlife without a vehicle or boat;
  • family safaris, with guides who shape the day around children and point out lion tracks, weaver bird nests and crocodiles;
  • an eco tour behind the scenes of the lodge, covering its environmental and community projects;
  • an air-conditioned gym.
Restaurants & bars

Most meals are taken outdoors, and drinks at both bars are included:

  • the main restaurant — a covered dining room with east and west decks for sunset dinners;
  • the riverside boma — a traditional open-air enclosure around a fire — for barbecue evenings with local performers;
  • Tswene Rooftop Bar — a rooftop bar;
  • Linyanti Bar — a bar styled as a Bedouin tent;
  • private dinners on the boardwalk above the river or on your own terrace, and snacks served on the river safaris.
Swimming

A large pool sits at the heart of the gardens, with loungers and daybeds. Each of the four suites has its own infinity plunge pool on a terrace overlooking the Chobe River.
