&Beyond Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp

About this hotel

General information

Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp is a small &Beyond camp in the Okavango Delta, on a private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. Mature mopane woodland meets seasonally flooded grassland here, so a day can be spent tracking the Big Five by vehicle or out on the water among channels and lagoons alive with hippo and hundreds of bird species.

Nine tents on wooden platforms, one of them a family tent, sit in the shade of towering ebony trees. The central pavilion, with teak floors and a high open-truss ceiling, brings together indoor and outdoor lounges and dining areas, a pool, a massage sala, an open-air boma beneath the trees and a shop of regional crafts. Most of the camp’s energy comes from its own solar plant with Tesla battery storage. Meals, most drinks, safari activities and laundry are included, and children of all ages are welcome.

Location

The camp occupies a 25,000-hectare concession on the edge of the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta. Airlink flies daily to Maun from Johannesburg and Cape Town; from there a Mack Air light aircraft, shared or private charter, continues to the Nxabega airstrip, followed by a game drive and, when the water is high, a boat transfer to camp. Helicopter transfers with Helicopter Horizons are also available, and transfers between the airstrip and the camp are included.

Spa

There is no full spa: Healing Earth treatments are given at extra cost in a dedicated massage sala looking out over the Delta, or in the privacy of the tent.

Sports & leisure

Twice-daily game drives in open vehicles (no more than six guests each) set out early in the morning and late in the afternoon, returning after dark, with a bush coffee stop in the morning and a sundowner in the evening. Also included:

  • guided walking safaris across the concession, reading tracks and animal behaviour;
  • mokoro outings through lily-filled channels, seasonal and water dependent;
  • motorboat cruises past hippo pods and waterside birdlife;
  • seasonal catch-and-release fishing in the Okavango Panhandle, home of the tiger fish;
  • birding in an area with more than 400 recorded species, among them a rare fishing owl;
  • guided photography, stargazing and bush brunches;
  • a visit to a village near Maun where the partner organisation Wild Impact and guests have built a school, and a behind-the-scenes sustainability tour of the camp.

At extra cost: a private vehicle with a dedicated guide, and scenic helicopter flights over the Delta, with the doors removed for photographers if wished. Every tent has a gym-in-a-basket kit.

For children

The WILDchild programme for children aged 3–12 includes baking with the chefs, learning to read tracks with a guide, bug-finding missions, fishing, lily-necklace making and stargazing evenings. There are children’s menus, shortened children’s game drives on request and childminders at extra cost.

Restaurants & bars

All meals are included, as are soft drinks, house wines, local beers and spirits; butler service, plated dining and private meals are all offered:

  • Central pavilion — indoor and outdoor dining with Delta views;
  • Interactive food and coffee bar — barista coffee, fresh juices and waffles with a choice of toppings;
  • Bar — pre-dinner drinks;
  • Boma — buffet dinners under the stars in an open-air enclosure ringed by a wooden fence beneath the ebony trees;
  • Bush brunch — a meal out on the concession during an outing with the guides.
Swimming

The camp’s shared pool is set among loungers and shaded salas overlooking the Delta. The tents do not have private pools.
