Parador Santa María la Real

About this hotel

General information

Parador Santa María la Real occupies a stately mansion from the second half of the 18th century in the historic centre of Sucre. The house was built on the outbuildings and garden of the palace of the Royal Audiencia of Charcas, the highest judicial and administrative body in this part of Spain’s American empire. A painstaking restoration kept the original structure intact, down to its colonial details, while fitting modern hotel comforts within the old walls.

The restoration also uncovered vaulted underground rooms, now home to the Watanay museum restaurant. The Los Oidores hall keeps part of the original carved wooden ceiling of the room where the Audiencia’s judges once heard cases, while the Santa María la Real hall is hung with three large canvases: the restored panels of a 19th-century French folding screen painted in tempera with landscapes. The house is completed by the Terraza 625 roof bar, a small spa and the Distrito 625 shop of Bolivian goods, from alpaca clothing by Bolivian designers to jewellery and wines.

Location

The hotel stands in the historic centre of Sucre, so the colonial city begins right at its door. Car transfers to and from Sucre airport can be arranged by the hotel, and there is a garage for guests arriving by car.

Spa

Spa y Gimnasio is the hotel’s small spa, with a sauna for one to five people, a hydro-massage shower and an outdoor hot tub for one to four. Treatments cover massage, manicure and pedicure.

Sports & leisure

A fitness room sits within the spa. The hotel helps plan walks and sightseeing around Sucre, and offers a business centre and its historic Los Oidores and Santa María la Real halls for meetings and receptions. The Distrito 625 shop sells Bolivian alpaca clothing, jewellery and wines.

Restaurants & bars

Dining is spread between the underground vaults, a café and the roof:

  • Watanay — a museum restaurant in vaulted underground rooms uncovered during the restoration, with colonial passageways, 18th-century furniture and intimate dinners; it takes its name from an old vaulted water channel, a Quechua word the hotel renders as “bound stones”
  • Restaurant Café Bar — a relaxed café-bar with tall French library cabinets and paintings by a Bolivian artist, serving coffee, cocktails, wines, salads, pasta, soups, burgers, pizzettas, desserts and Bolivian and international dishes
  • Terraza 625 — a roof bar with views across the city, refined plates and signature cocktails

An American buffet breakfast is included, and room service runs from 07:00 to 22:00.
