Six Senses Thimphu

About this hotel

General information

Six Senses Thimphu sits on a hillside above Bhutan’s capital at 2,730 m, among apple orchards and pine forest, with the lights of the city spread out below at night. The lodge is a contemporary reading of a traditional palace: reflecting ponds lead to the entrance, floor-to-ceiling glass frames the valley, panels are hand-carved from hemlock, and clouds and dragons are painted onto pale washed stone.

There are 25 suites and villas, from 77 m² suites up to the only three-bedroom villa in the Thimphu valley. Interiors follow the Bhutanese ideals of simplicity and harmony, with bukhari wood-burning stoves, vegetable-dyed Himalayan rugs and natural timber. The lodge has the Namkha restaurant, a bar, a spa with an indoor pool, a prayer pavilion, a library and a boutique. It works as a stay in its own right or as the first stop on a multi-valley journey with the other Six Senses lodges in Bhutan.

Location

The lodge stands on a rise above the Thimphu valley, within easy reach of the capital’s sights; on clear days the restaurant windows look out to distant Himalayan peaks. Paro airport is about an hour’s drive away through forested mountains dotted with monasteries and temples. A guide meets guests on arrival, and helicopter transfers from Paro can be arranged. During the stay the lodge provides a private guide with transport.

Spa

Six Senses Spa Thimphu opens daily from 9 am to 9 pm. It has five treatment rooms, two of them for couples, a traditional dotsho hot stone bath, a steam room and sauna, an indoor pool, a yoga studio, a prayer and meditation pavilion, a fitness centre, a manicure and pedicure room, a herb garden and an Alchemy Bar. Every treatment opens with a ritual built around a clear quartz crystal, Bhutanese chanting and singing bowls. Signature choices include the dotsho bath with river stones heated for hours, a scrub blended from Bhutanese herbs, Himalayan salts and essential oils, a detox journey with tulsi, wild turmeric and lime, and a yogic digestive cleanse; wellness screening and in-villa massage are also offered.

Restaurants & bars

Cooking draws on vegetables and herbs from the lodge’s organic gardens, fresh trout and local produce, served on the terrace in summer and beside the bukhari in winter:

  • Namkha — Bhutanese, Asian and international dishes in a high-ceilinged room with cloud-themed walls and windows facing the peaks; 60 seats inside and 16 on the terrace, with smoked trout and momo dumplings in a fiery chilli sauce among the dishes
  • The bar — a cosy spot for canapés and light bites in winter, with cocktails built on local spirits and botanicals moving out to the terrace in summer
  • Private dining room — for gatherings of up to 10 guests
  • Lungsigang — afternoon tea with local snacks at a viewpoint a short walk uphill from the lodge
  • Nimnub point — sunset cocktails and canapés looking out towards the Paro valley
Swimming

A heated indoor pool is part of the lodge’s spa.
