Six Senses Gangtey

About this hotel

General information

Six Senses Gangtey is one of the most intimate of the brand’s Bhutan lodges: eight suites and a single two-bedroom villa on the western rim of the Phobjikha valley. Known here as the Birdwatching Bridge, the building is made of local ashlar stone and hemlock, with double-height windows framing a 180-degree sweep of the valley, and hand-woven rugs inside that picture the black-necked cranes that winter in the valley below.

Lodge life gathers in the Living Room, warmed by a twin-flue bukhari and home to a mix-your-own martini bar. Around it sit the Baazam restaurant, a library, a movie and games room, an outdoor fire pit and a compact spa. Days are spent walking among grazing yaks and horses, cycling the valley floor and calling at local temples and monasteries. Gangtey is usually part of a longer journey that links it with the other Six Senses lodges in Bhutan.

Location

The lodge overlooks the Phobjikha valley near the village of Gangtey, at roughly 3,000 m on the western slopes of the Black Mountains. The glacial valley is a designated conservation area, with Gangtey Goemba standing at its head. The road comes east from Punakha through Wangdue Phodrang and climbs above deep ravines before dropping into the valley; the lodge arranges transfers with a driver, and helicopter transfers on request.

Spa

Six Senses Spa Gangtey is a small wellness centre with one single and one double treatment room, two Swedana areas for herbal steam therapy, showers and lockers. Swedana sessions come with views across the valley, and yoga classes and guided meditation round out the programme.

Sports & leisure

Phobjikha is a valley to explore slowly, on foot or by bike, and the lodge plans each day around it:

  • a hike from the Pele La pass through a village where yak herders camp in winter, up to the Kayche La pass (3,700 m) with views over the valley
  • a two-hour walk on the Gangtey Nature Trail down to a village and through the forest, with hot chocolate and snacks at the halfway stop
  • prayers or meditation with the monks of Gangtey Goemba
  • Khewang Lhakhang, with its statues of the past, present and future Buddhas — and perhaps a game of football with the young novices
  • evening prayers and butter-lamp lighting at the tiny Damchen Lhakhang
  • bike rides to little-visited villages, and birdwatching for black-necked cranes through the binoculars on each suite’s balcony
For children

The Grow With Six Senses programme offers family activities devised by the lodge’s specialists, and babysitting is available on request.

Restaurants & bars

Meals at Gangtey are served both in the lodge and out in the valley:

  • Baazam (“bridge”) — the all-day restaurant, seating 20
  • The Living Room — lounge with a bukhari stove and a mix-your-own martini bar
  • The fire pit — an outdoor spot for evenings after a day on the trails
  • Cow Shed — a candlelit dinner cooked on a traditional clay stove, following evening prayers at Damchen Lhakhang
  • Village meals — a buckwheat lunch or a traditional dinner in a farmhouse nearby
