Six Senses Bumthang

About this hotel

General information

Six Senses Bumthang is built as a forest within a forest: the easternmost lodge of the brand’s Bhutan collection, tucked into pine woods above a babbling, trout-filled stream. Hemlock and pine carry from the facades into the rooms, and each of the eight suites wraps around a private courtyard with its own tree planted at the centre, so forest bathing begins without leaving the suite. Every window looks out over the trees and across the valley.

Bumthang is often called the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, four valleys of forest, rivers and villages scattered with ancient temples and monasteries. The lodge keeps to a small scale, with eight suites and a two-bedroom villa, a restaurant, a living room, a library and a spa with a hot stone bath, and makes a quiet base for exploring them. It is often combined with the other Six Senses lodges in Bhutan on a journey through several valleys.

Location

The lodge sits among blue pines close to the Chamkar Chhu river in Bumthang, the gateway to eastern Bhutan. The drive from Gangtey is a memorable one, passing terraced farmland and cliff-perched farmhouses, then Trongsa, the Yotong La pass and the Chumey valley, known for its yathra wool weaving; yak herds are a common sight along the way. The lodge arranges transfers with a driver, and helicopter charters from Paro airport can be booked.

Spa

Six Senses Spa Bumthang has two single treatment rooms and hot stone bath facilities. Yoga classes and guided meditation are also on offer.

Sports & leisure

The lodge plans outings across the Bumthang valleys:

  • Kurjey Lhakhang, one of the most revered temples in Bhutan
  • a horseback ride to Ogyen Choling Manor in the lovely Tang valley
  • an early start for the Burning Lake, Membartsho
  • morning tea with the nuns of Pema Choling
  • a hike up to the hilltop Padseling Goemba
  • yoga and guided meditation at the lodge
For children

Families can join the Grow With Six Senses programme, with activities put together by the lodge’s specialists, and babysitting is available on request.

Restaurants & bars

The all-day restaurant seats 24 inside and 12 outdoors. Evenings start with light refreshments on the deck as the sun goes down, followed by a traditional Bhutanese dinner, and there is a 24-seat living room and a library for lingering afterwards.
