Amankora Thimphu

About this hotel

General information

Amankora Thimphu sits secluded in a pine forest on the hillside above Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. Its 16 suites occupy buildings that borrow from traditional dzong architecture – whitewashed walls, timber pavilions, stone terraces – with a pared-back contemporary touch. All around are forest and Himalayan views, although the city centre is only a short drive away.

This is the urban chapter of a journey: an easy base for museums, textile factories and the vast Buddha Dordenma on its hill above the valley, with the quiet of the woods to come back to at night. Thimphu is usually combined with the other Amankora lodges in Bhutan’s valleys, and stays are arranged as itineraries rather than as single nights. The lodge has a spa, a library, a gallery and a boutique.

Location

The lodge stands in pine forest above Thimphu, close to the centre of the capital. Paro airport is about 50 km away, a drive of roughly 90 minutes, and each stay comes with a private vehicle, driver and guide.

Spa

The spa has three treatment rooms and a steam room. Signature therapies include 1,000 Gold Therapy, which pairs acupuncture with a holistic approach to balancing energy and the five elements, and sound bath sessions with healing instruments and music. Traditional medicine with moxibustion and meridian therapy is offered too.

Sports & leisure

Around the lodge are forest trails, temples and views over the capital:

  • complimentary morning yoga with an experienced teacher on a platform among tall pines, suitable for all levels
  • a guided hike to the 12th-century temple at Dodedrak, with lunch alongside local monks
  • the Wangditse hike – an hour through the forest to Wangditse monastery, with views of Thimphu and Tashichho Dzong
  • the Buddha Dordenma, a 52 m monument holding 125,000 gilded bronze Buddha figures
  • high-altitude golf on a nine-hole course at around 2,350 m with the dzong as a backdrop
  • traditional archery, plus hiking and mountain-biking trails from the lodge
  • evening performances of Bhutanese folk tales
Restaurants & bars

The Dining Room serves Bhutanese, Western and Indian dishes designed for sharing, and its outdoor deck opens onto the forest. For a special evening there is the Forest and Stream Dinner, where a private chef cooks over an open flame beside a stream in the pines – a claypot dinner or a Bhutanese take on shabu-shabu. The lodge also arranges a hilltop Bhutanese breakfast facing the Buddha Dordenma after a gentle walk, a tour of Thimphu’s farmers’ market with its almost 400 stalls of honey, dried cheese and chillies, and a walk through its kitchen garden.

The lodge has 16 suites of a single type, each about 52 m², with views over the pine forest and the mountains.
