About this hotel
General information
Amankora Punakha is set in a farmhouse some three centuries old, in the warm, subtropical Punakha valley at around 1,250 m. The valley is fertile enough to grow most of the country’s vegetables, and the lodge is wrapped in forest, fruit trees and orchards, with rice paddies and the Mo Chhu river below. Arrival is by way of a suspension bridge, which sets the unhurried pace from the start.
There are twelve suites, two of them the spacious Mo Chhu Suites. The old farmhouse now holds private dining rooms, a heated infinity pool runs above the rice terraces, and the lodge also has a two-storey spa, a library, a media room and an Altar Room for Buddhist rituals. Stays at Amankora are arranged as tailored itineraries, and Punakha is often combined with the brand’s other Bhutan lodges on a journey through several valleys.
Location
The lodge lies in the Punakha valley, near Punakha Dzong, the fortress-monastery at the meeting of the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers, and is reached across a suspension bridge. Throughout an Amankora stay, a private vehicle with driver and an English-speaking guide are at guests’ disposal.
Spa
The two-storey spa blends traditional Bhutanese therapies with a hammam steam room, Jacuzzi, cold plunge and bucket shower, alongside a yoga studio, meditation room and relaxation lounge. Its menu is built around the Signature Grounding treatments, and each morning a teacher leads a complimentary yoga class with guided breathing for all levels.
Sports & leisure
Walking and biking trails begin at the lodge itself. A morning hike through farmland climbs to Khamsum Chorten, where the guide sets up a picnic breakfast with valley views. Other outings include a tour of Punakha Dzong and its art, rafting or kayaking on the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu, a cooking class that starts at a farmers’ market, and a visit to the Kaja Throm market. Bows are kept at the lodge for traditional archery, and in the evenings folk tales are retold through music, song and dance. Most hikes, archery and mountain biking are included in the stay.
Restaurants & bars
Cooking draws on the valley’s subtropical produce, served indoors and out:
- Dining Room – Bhutanese, Western and Indian dishes from local ingredients, with a terrace over the valley and rice fields
- Farmhouse Dining Experience – private dining rooms in the old farmhouse for an intimate Bhutanese dinner
- Riverside Barbecue – a private grilled lunch or dinner on the bank of the Mo Chhu, candlelit after dark
- Khamsum Breakfast Hike – a picnic breakfast along the morning walk to Khamsum Chorten
Swimming
The heated outdoor infinity pool sits above the rice terraces, looking out to forest-covered Himalayan slopes.
