About this hotel
General information
Amankora Gangtey has eight suites on a forested knoll in the little-visited Phobjikha valley. It looks over the valley floor to the 16th-century Gangtey Goemba monastery, with farmland on every side, and life here keeps a quiet, rural rhythm.
Every suite is warmed by a wood-burning stove, and the lodge has a dining room with long family-style tables and a terrace, a two-room spa and a traditional hot stone bath in a wooden hut above the valley, and walking and biking trails begin at the door. Amankora stays are planned as tailored itineraries, and Gangtey is often paired with the brand’s other Bhutan lodges on a journey across several valleys.
Location
The lodge sits on a wooded rise in the Phobjikha valley, facing Gangtey Goemba across fields and farmland. In winter, black-necked cranes roost on the valley’s grasslands. A private vehicle with driver and an English-speaking guide are on hand for the whole of an Amankora stay.
Spa
The spa has two treatment rooms with mountain and valley views, and its menu leans on Bhutanese practice, including traditional Buddhist cleansing rituals. In a wooden hut above the Phobjikha valley, the hot stone bath is heated with river stones that release their minerals into the water, infused with khempa herbs; it can be taken by candlelight with the valley spread below. A complimentary guided yoga class with breathwork runs each morning for every level.
Sports & leisure
Hiking and mountain-biking routes lead straight out across the valley, and the team keeps several bows for traditional archery and is happy to coach. Early in the morning, a local monk leads a herb-burning cleansing ritual at the lodge’s stupa. With a member of the Amankora team, guests can shop for ingredients at local stores and offer a meal to one of the monks of Gangtey Goemba, or visit the local school in Phobjikha, attended by more than a hundred children.
Restaurants & bars
Meals revolve around local produce and the lodge’s own garden:
- Dining Room – Bhutanese, Western and Indian dishes at large family-style tables, with an outdoor terrace
- Potato Shed – private Bhutanese dinners in a stone potato store lit by hundreds of candles and warmed by a bukhari stove
- Kitchen Garden Tour – an informal walk with the gardener among greens, herbs and spices; at harvest, guests gather potatoes for the chef to cook
