Ka'ana Resort

About this hotel

General information

Ka'ana Resort is an intimate boutique hotel on the edge of the rainforest just outside San Ignacio, in Belize's western Cayo District. Its name means 'heavenly place' in the Maya language. Rooms, suites and villas are scattered through lush gardens on an estate of about 17 acres, with interiors that pair clean lines and modern comfort with Belizean textures, colours and artisan textiles.

The hotel revolves around its own organic garden, which sends herbs, fruit and seasonal produce to the kitchen of La Ceiba and into the cocktails at The Wallace, while eggs for breakfast come from the chicken coop on the grounds. There is an infinity pool, Ool Spa, yoga, a concierge and a 24-hour front desk, and the hotel's team plans days out to ancient Maya cities, caves, rivers and waterfalls across the district.

Location

The hotel lies just outside San Ignacio in the Cayo District. The archaeological site of Cahal Pech is about 4 km away (around 7 minutes by car), and Xunantunich above the Mopan River about 6 km (around 18 minutes). The San Ignacio airstrip is 2 km away and Belize's international airport (near Belize City) 114 km; the drive from Belize City takes about 1 hour 43 minutes. The hotel arranges private transfers from the airport, where a guide meets guests, as well as helicopter flights over rainforest, rivers and waterfalls.

Spa

Ool Spa is a small spa set among tropical gardens. Treatments take place in quiet indoor rooms or outdoors beneath the trees: aromatherapy massages, herbal steam baths, organic facials, and scrubs and wraps made with cacao, coffee, sugar and local herbs. After active days there are cooling aloe and chamomile treatments for sun-exposed skin and massages for tired muscles after hiking. Treatments can also be booked in the villas.

Sports & leisure

The hotel has an infinity pool and a fitness room. Complimentary yoga takes place among the trees on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and private yoga or Pilates sessions can be booked in advance. Each evening guests gather around the fire in the garden, and on clear nights the grounds lend themselves to stargazing. The hotel's team arranges guided days out:

  • cave tubing through river caves and a zip-line over the forest canopy
  • Barton Creek Cave, explored by canoe
  • the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve: pine forest, granite outcrops, swimming at Big Rock Falls and the Rio Frio Cave
  • a day on the river by pontoon: swimming in natural pools, river tubing, waterfalls and a barbecue lunch on board
  • Xunantunich, with temples and plazas on a limestone ridge overlooking the valleys, reached by a hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan River
  • Caracol, a large ancient Maya city deep in the rainforest of the Cayo District
  • guided birdwatching
Restaurants & bars

Cooking at Ka'ana draws on its own garden, and dinner need not stay in the restaurant.

  • La Ceiba — the main restaurant, set in a farmhouse-style room: American-Belizean cooking and a chef's menu built on seasonal produce, much of it from the organic garden, with a considered wine list; 24 seats inside and 24 outside, hand-pressed corn tortillas in the morning and a candlelit five-course dinner in the evening
  • The Wallace — a fireside courtyard bar with signature cocktails made with garden herbs, fresh takes on the classics, wines from the hotel's cellar, local beers and small plates
  • Garden Fire Feast — an open-air dinner in the garden, with seasonal ingredients cooked over open flames
  • Garden Gathering Breakfast — breakfast in the garden, where guests can collect eggs from the chicken coop and have them cooked for the table
  • private dining — beneath the stars, in the garden, by the pool, in the wine cellar or on the terrace of a suite or villa

Room service is also available.
