Gaïa Riverlodge

About this hotel

General information

Gaïa Riverlodge sits above the Five Sisters waterfalls, deep in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve of western Belize. Named after Gaia, the Greek goddess of the Earth, the lodge is built around a quiet balance of comfort and wilderness: pine forest, steep river valleys, the sound of water below and next to no mobile signal. It is a place for switching off for a few days.

Seventeen private thatched casitas are scattered across the hillside, from cabanas and suites to a villa by the river. They are built of Belizean hardwoods with palmetto walls, polished mahogany details and bathrooms in hand-painted Mexican tiles. Power comes from the lodge’s own hydroelectric plant on the falls, backed by solar panels. A tram running on the same hydropower takes guests down to the water. Guests must be 16 or older.

Location

The lodge lies in the Cayo District, within the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, about an hour from San Ignacio along the reserve’s unpaved roads, so a 4×4 is recommended for anyone driving themselves. The journey from Belize City takes around two hours. The lodge arranges private transfers from anywhere in Belize.

Spa

Treatments take place at the foot of the Five Sisters waterfalls under a private thatched pavilion, or in the guest’s own cabana or on its patio. Products are made with natural ingredients from Belize and its neighbours. The menu covers deep-tissue, aromatherapy and therapeutic massage (Swedish combined with shiatsu), a head, hands and feet massage, the refreshing EcoCalm facial with a sea-salt scrub and cucumber mask, a papaya or banana fruit-enzyme facial, and a body scrub of locally grown coffee and sugar. Booking at least a day ahead is advised.

Sports & leisure

Bicycles and helmets are free for guests, and the lodge’s private trails suit both walking and cycling. The lodge also arranges walks and excursions, with certified guides on every off-site trip:

  • a complimentary early-morning forest walk and sunrise birdwatching for resident and migrant species
  • a night walk through the forest with all lights off, to listen to its nocturnal life
  • a tour of the organic garden that supplies the kitchen
  • a walk or ride to Big Rock Falls, about 1.6 km from the lodge
  • a day at Caracol, the Maya city in Belize’s Chiquibul forest, including an early start for birding among the ruins
  • a canoe trip down the Macal River past San Ignacio and Santa Elena, followed by Xunantunich
  • Barton Creek Cave, explored by canoe, and Rio Frio Cave
  • cave tubing along an underground river and a zip line above the forest canopy
  • a campfire under the stars a few nights a week
Restaurants & bars

Five Sisters Restaurant is open-sided, with a wraparound veranda over the falls and the valley. The cooking mixes Belizean and international flavours; most fruit, vegetables and herbs come from the lodge’s organic garden, the rest from nearby farms and the Caribbean Sea. Mornings bring breads and pastries from the in-house bakery, lunches are light and tropical, afternoons bring coffee and snacks, and dinner leans on Belizean notes. Alongside is a cocktail lounge with a wine list and signature drinks built on coconut, cacao, ginger, garden chaya and habanero, the house favourite being a vanilla-cinnamon coffee martini. An open-fire Belizean barbecue is held from time to time, and the concierge can set up a private dinner for two.

Swimming

There is no pool: guests swim in the natural freshwater pools beneath the Five Sisters waterfalls, reached by a handrail, with towels for the falls left in each cabana. The river can be reached on foot or by the tram.

Rooms

The cabanas, suites and villa look out over forest, river, the Maya Mountains or the falls, and many have panoramic windows or a private veranda. There is no air conditioning: every unit is cooled by fans only.

In each room

Each unit has a ceiling fan, Matouk and Frette linen, a walk-in shower, Ortigia toiletries, a safe, torches, filtered spring water daily and free Wi-Fi (fine for email and browsing, not for streaming), and morning coffee or tea can be brought to the door on request.
