Kasteel van Ordingen

About this hotel

General information

Kasteel van Ordingen is a castle estate among the orchards of Haspengouw in southern Limburg, a Relais & Châteaux member classed five-star superior. The castle began in the early Middle Ages as a border stronghold, spent two centuries in the hands of the Teutonic Order and was substantially rebuilt in the 19th century. Today it is a protected monument with Renaissance features, corner towers and a gatehouse, set beside the former residence of the Order's commanders.

The castle and the commander's residence hold 32 rooms and suites that pair the atmosphere of an old house with modern comfort. Estate life revolves around three venues: the gastronomic restaurant Aurum in the castle's state rooms, Bistro Richard in the courtyard, and a maximalist bar and lounge. Guests have a private wellness area with a hammam and sauna, and the old gatehouse contains three meeting rooms.

Location

The estate stands in the village of Ordingen, part of the town of Sint-Truiden, in the rolling orchard and vineyard country of Haspengouw in southern Limburg. Hasselt, Liège, Leuven and Maastricht across the Dutch border are all within reach. There are two free car parks; the one inside the grounds is locked at night and has charging points for electric cars and e-bikes.

Spa

The wellness area works as a private space: guests reserve a one-hour slot at reception and have it to themselves. It has a hammam, a sauna, infrared chairs and an experience shower, and access is included in the room rate.

Sports & leisure

The fitness room is open daily and is also booked through reception. The hotel rents out e-bikes, and Sint-Truiden sits on the Limburg Cycling Paradise network of around 2,000 km of largely car-free cycle paths. Vespa scooters can be hired for touring the orchards, with routes suggested by the staff. Nearby are Museum De Mindere with its collection of Franciscan monastic heritage (4 km), a floating chapel built from split cherry trunks (5 km), the Wilderen brewery (7 km), the Gloire de Duras and Kitsberg wine estates (8–9 km) and walking trails around Borgloon.

Restaurants & bars

The estate has a gastronomic restaurant, a bistro and a bar, and room service runs around the clock:

  • Aurum — gastronomic restaurant in the castle's state rooms, with refined cooking inspired by the North Sea and the Eastern Scheldt, lifted by herbs, citrus and local produce; its Knights' Hall hosts private dinners
  • Bistro Richard — courtyard bistro serving regional classics such as shrimp croquettes, bouchée à la reine, sole and hand-cut steak tartare; breakfast is also served here as a buffet of homemade and local produce with the estate's own sparkling wine
  • Bar & Lounge — maximalist bar beside reception with velvet armchairs, soft piano music, signature cocktails, champagne, local beers, wines and ciders
Pets

Pets are not allowed in the rooms or in most areas of the castle; small dogs of up to 5 kg are welcome only at Bistro Richard.

Rooms

The 32 rooms and suites are spread between the commander's residence and the castle itself; the entry category is in the commander's residence only, the larger ones in both buildings. Some rooms have fixed air conditioning, while the others receive mobile units in warm weather so that the listed building keeps its authentic character.
