Hotel De Orangerie

About this hotel

General information

Hotel De Orangerie occupies a former 15th-century Carthusian monastery on the banks of the Dijver canal, in a quiet corner of Bruges's UNESCO-listed historic centre. It is an intimate house of 20 rooms spread over five floors and a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

The interiors keep the feel of an old townhouse: wood-panelled walls, gilded mirrors, velvet armchairs, tall windows and heavy drapes, with a fire burning in the salon. There is no restaurant; the day is shaped instead by breakfast, afternoon tea and a drink at the fireside bar. In the warmer months the hotel moves outdoors to a terrace set right at the water's edge, looking out over the canal.

Location

The hotel sits on the Dijver canal at the heart of old Bruges, yet in a calm spot: the Belfry is 230 m away, the Markt a few minutes' walk, the canal-boat landing 120 m, the Church of Our Lady 500 m and the béguinage about 1 km. The railway station is a 30-minute walk, and several bus lines stop nearby. The nearest airports are Ostend (25 km) and Brussels Airport (95 km). Hotel parking is charged and must be reserved in advance, there is a public car park close by, and electric-car charging is available.

Sports & leisure

Leisure here is the city itself, most of it within a short stroll. Half-hour boat trips along the canals leave from a landing 120 m from the door; the Gruuthusemuseum, with its Flemish tapestries, is 300 m away, the City Hall and its Gothic hall 350 m, and close by are the Groeningemuseum, home to the Flemish Primitives, and Museum Sint-Janshospitaal with its intact medieval pharmacy. De Halve Maan brewery, 750 m away, runs guided tours, The Old Chocolate House offers Belgian chocolate and waffles nearby, and the Belgian coast is about 20 minutes away.

For children

Babysitting can be arranged on request.

Restaurants & bars

There is no restaurant on site — plenty are within walking distance — and the hotel concentrates on breakfast, afternoon tea and its bar.

  • Breakfast — a buffet with dishes cooked to order and gluten-free options, daily from 08:00 to 10:30
  • Afternoon tea — daily from 14:30 to 16:30, booked at least a day ahead: scones with clotted cream and artisanal jams, with mini pastries, sandwiches and a glass of champagne in the fuller versions; served on the terrace in fine weather and by the fireplace when it turns grey
  • Bar — a snug room with an open fire, for an aperitif
  • Canal terrace — on the Dijver, for morning coffee and evening drinks by the water

Room service is available.
