Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp

About this hotel

General information

Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp fills a whole block of historic buildings in Antwerp’s old town, right beside the Botanical Garden. The former monastery and hospital complex spans five restored buildings, with a Gothic chapel from the 15th century, 17th-century monastery wings and rectory, cloistered courtyards, vaulted ceilings and stone passageways. Gardens and courtyards keep the city at a distance, even though the shopping streets of the centre are only minutes away on foot.

Classified five-star superior and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, it pairs old architecture with restrained contemporary interiors: oak floors, natural stone, fine fabrics, antiques and art. Within the walls are several gastronomic restaurants, a bistro and bar, a 1,000 m² spa with an 18-metre pool, a fitness club open around the clock, a ballroom for events and the Saint Charles Store, set in a historic apothecary.

Location

The hotel sits on Lange Gasthuisstraat in Antwerp’s old town, directly next to the Botanical Garden. The Cathedral of Our Lady, the Grote Markt, the fashion boutiques and the diamond quarter are all within an easy walk, and Antwerp Central Station is about 20 minutes away on foot. Antwerp Airport is 5 km away and Brussels Airport 45 km; transfers and a shuttle can be arranged by the hotel on request. Drivers have valet parking and electric-vehicle charging on site.

Spa

Botanic Health Spa covers 1,000 m² over three floors and looks out to the greenery of the Botanical Garden. It has an 18-metre panoramic pool, a whirlpool, several saunas and steam rooms, a thermal area, an ice fountain, botanical showers and a relaxation gallery with cocooning nooks. Ten treatment rooms, two of them for couples, offer massages, facials and rituals drawing on phytotherapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine and old monastic recipes. Next door, the Saint Charles Store occupies a former apothecary and sells natural care products. Hotel guests use the spa free of charge; it is open daily from 7 am to 10 pm.

Sports & leisure

Botanic Health Club is open 24 hours a day and equipped by Technogym, with cardio and strength machines and an InBody body-composition scanner. Personal training, nutrition advice and group classes can be booked, and the club is free for hotel guests. The Botanical Garden is right outside for a stroll, and the old town, with its museums, galleries and the Scheldt waterfront, is best explored on foot.

For children

Young guests receive a children’s backpack and a storybook, and the hotel’s restaurants serve dishes for children. Babysitting can be arranged on request for a fee.

Restaurants & bars

Food is one of the main reasons to stay: the complex holds several restaurants, each with its own format.

  • Hertog Jan — Japanese-inspired gastronomy, a chef’s-choice menu built on West Flemish produce, with its own glasshouse, beehives and herb garden
  • Fine Fleur — gastronomic restaurant in a historic setting, focused on seasonal and regional ingredients
  • Sanctus — an intimate table serving a single tasting menu that changes every month
  • Hidden Garden — classic cooking with international influences, for a light lunch or an elegant dinner
  • Bar Bulot — a chic brasserie in blue and white, serving Belgian and French classics, fish and shellfish
  • Henry’s Bar — cocktail bar and bistro with Belgian dishes
  • Afternoon at Botanic — afternoon tea in the Gingerbread House within the Botanical Garden

Breakfast — a buffet of local producers’ fare plus dishes cooked to order — is served in Catalpa, a room filled with plants and antique botanical prints, and there is a Sunday brunch.

Swimming

The spa has an 18-metre indoor panoramic pool looking out to the garden, with a whirlpool alongside.

Pets

Pets are not allowed in the hotel, including the restaurants.
