About this hotel
General information
The Potlatch Club is a small beach resort on the Atlantic shore of Eleuthera, founded in 1967 as a private hideaway for a cosmopolitan set. In the 1960s and 1970s it drew British royalty, Elizabeth Taylor and Greta Garbo, and Paul and Linda McCartney honeymooned here — lyrics for at least two Beatles songs were written on the club’s notepaper. The name comes from the potlatch, the ceremonial feast of the Pacific Northwest’s Indigenous peoples at which hosts give away gifts.
Just eleven suites, cottages and villas are spread across twelve acres of tropical gardens running down to a pink-sand beach. Some buildings are mid-century originals — the oldest house dates from 1923, when the estate was a pineapple plantation, others followed between 1947 and 1965, when architect Ray James Holman Nathanials brought modernism to the island — while newer pavilions were placed to spare the mature palms and Norfolk Island pines. Pink coral-stone floors, whitewashed walls, high fan-cooled ceilings and original artwork give it the feel of a private club with few guests and plenty of space. Stays are for a minimum of three nights.
Location
The resort sits just outside Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera’s capital, known for its colourful clapboard colonial houses and five minutes away by car. Eleuthera lies about 80 km east of Nassau, a flight of around 20 minutes; Governor’s Harbour Airport is a 15-minute drive from the hotel.
Spa
Acqua Spa works with Natura Bissé products, offering massages, healing therapies, body treatments and beauty rituals. The signature massage blends Swedish deep-tissue work, reflexology and holistic techniques with Ayurvedic touches. Treatments take place in a double treatment room, in guests’ own quarters or on the beach, and the spa has a pool alongside with a terrace for Pilates and yoga.
Sports & leisure
There are two pools: the main crescent pool by the Sand Bar and a second on the site of the club’s original pool, next to the restaurant terrace. A fully equipped gym completes the set-up. From the beach, guests can paddle a glass-bottomed kayak out to the reef — dolphins sometimes pass around midday — or try stand-up paddleboarding. The concierge arranges car hire or a driver, guided tours of Eleuthera’s sights, beach picnics with hampers from the kitchen, boat trips, snorkelling, fishing and sunset cruises. The whole resort can be booked exclusively for weddings and family celebrations.
For children
Children are welcome: two of the Garden Suites interconnect for families, and the four-bedroom Pineapple House is designed with families in mind. Babysitting is available with 24 hours’ notice.
Restaurants & bars
Dining centres on a restaurant set beneath an old banyan tree.
- The Fig Tree — breakfast, lunch and dinner with a light, Asian fusion-inspired menu, served on the banyan-shaded terrace or in the lofty, fan-cooled dining room
- Fig Tree bar — aperitifs, cocktails and nightcaps, with a long list of champagnes, wines and spirits
- The Sand Bar — a spired pavilion above the main pool with sea views, serving wines, beers, cocktails and light bites into the evening
Private dinners can be set up in guests’ rooms or on the beach, and Pineapple House guests can have meals cooked in the villa’s professional kitchen.
Swimming
The resort fronts its own stretch of soft pink-sand beach on Eleuthera’s Atlantic side, with clear, warm water and miles of near-empty shoreline for walking. A reef lies just offshore. Two pools, with loungers in the sun or under the palms, complete the picture.
