About this hotel
General information
The Cove Eleuthera is a small resort on northern Eleuthera, near Gregory Town, set on a headland between two white-sand coves. Both beaches are private, which gives the place the air of an island within an island — secluded, quiet and a little hidden from the road. It is the only Relais & Châteaux hotel in the Bahamas.
Accommodation runs from beachfront junior suites to villas and suites with one to three bedrooms. An infinity pool crowns the hill, Point Bar sits at the cliff edge, and Freedom, the restaurant, has its own sushi bar. The name echoes the island’s story: Puritan settlers arrived in 1648 and called it Eleutheria, Greek for freedom. A nature trail loops through native planting of orchids, palms and kamalame trees. The pineapple, long farmed around Gregory Town, is the resort’s emblem of hospitality. The whole property can be taken for weddings and retreats, with a conference room for 30 and a library alongside.
Location
The resort lies on Queen’s Highway in Gregory Town, in the north of Eleuthera, a long and slender island about 80 km east of Nassau. The nearest airports are North Eleuthera (ELH) and Governor’s Harbour (GHB), with daily flights from Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Atlanta and Nassau; the resort helps arrange airport transfers. Gaulding Cay beach and the natural rock pools of Queen’s Bath are a few minutes’ drive away, with the Glass Window Bridge and Preacher’s Cave further afield.
Spa
The Cove Spa Suites keeps a focused menu built around bodywork: The Cove Signature Massage, the Island Stone Ritual with hot stones, the Ocean Calm deep-tissue massage with a CBD oil blend, Thai massage, the Island Glow facial and a facial designed for men, sea-salt or coffee scrubs, OPI manicures and pedicures, and a ritual for mothers-to-be. Aromatherapy is done with Body Bliss: before each treatment the therapist blends a personal scent from pure essential oils.
Sports & leisure
The fitness centre is open around the clock, yoga is held in the morning and at sunset, and the pickleball courts host weekly clinics and tournaments. Kayaks, paddleboards, snorkelling gear and bicycles are available to guests, and green sea turtles are a common sight offshore in winter. A trail of about 1.6 km loops through native vegetation and over boardwalks across the wetlands — good for birdwatching — and a telescope can be brought to the room for stargazing.
- Floating Sea Lounge — a moored open-air lounge with two hammocks for up to four
- bonefishing, deep-drop and deep-sea fishing with local guides
- half- and full-day boat trips — reef and sandbar snorkelling, Spanish Wells — and an hour-long sunset cruise
- surfing
- island tours to the Glass Window Bridge, Queen’s Bath, Preacher’s Cave, the Sapphire Blue Hole, Governor’s Harbour and the Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve
- sushi-making demonstrations and sip-and-paint sessions in the room
For children
There is no kids’ club, but most of the resort’s activities are open to adults and children alike: the beaches, the pool, kayaks, paddleboards, snorkelling, the floating lounge and boat trips. Freedom has a children’s menu, and the spa offers a parent-and-child massage for ages 6–11. The two- and three-bedroom suites and villas suit families.
Restaurants & bars
The kitchen leans towards Asian flavours, with fish and island produce at its centre and bread and pastries baked in-house every day.
- Freedom Restaurant & Sushi Bar — ocean-view dining room with an Asian-inspired menu and sushi; breakfast, lunch and dinner
- Gregory Town Grill — beachside lunches with a tropical slant
- Point Bar — cliff-edge bar between the north and south beaches for cocktails, beer, wine and sunsets
- Private Dining — candlelit dinners for two on the sand, beach bonfires, a private chef or bartender in the room or on the beach
Once a week the resort holds a Taste of Bahamas evening with Bahamian dishes and live Junkanoo music.
Swimming
The resort has two private white-sand beaches in neighbouring coves, where beach attendants arrange the day on the sand and serve cocktails, snacks and fresh coconuts from a beach menu. A heated infinity pool sits on the hilltop overlooking the sea, and the largest villas have pools of their own.
Pets
Well-behaved dogs up to 30 lb (13.6 kg) are welcome if house-trained, quiet and gentle; a cleaning fee applies per stay, and beds and bowls are available on request. Dogs must be on a lead in public areas and are not allowed in the pool area or the restaurants. Entering the Bahamas with a dog requires an import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture, Trade and Industry, health records, a rabies vaccination certificate and a veterinary health certificate issued within 48 hours of travel.
