Kamalame Cay

About this hotel

General information

Kamalame Cay is a private island of about 39 hectares off the east coast of Andros, some 1.6 km from the Andros barrier reef, the third-largest in the world. Coconut palms, flowering gardens and nearly 5 km of white-sand beach frame a small resort of bungalows, cottages and villas set right by the water, each placed for privacy and an open view of the sea. The look is relaxed and West Indian: cedar-shingle roofs, whitewashed timber, French doors and deep verandas.

The island is meant for switching off: rooms have no televisions or landline telephones, and Wi-Fi is limited to the shared spaces and some villas. Every guest is given a golf cart, and a continental breakfast basket arrives at the door each morning. The kitchen is known for daily-changing Bahamian menus with an Asian accent. Guests choose between paying à la carte and one of two Guest of House plans covering all meals. The cay closes every year in September and October for the hurricane season, and stays over Christmas and New Year carry a five-night minimum.

Location

The cay lies off the east coast of Andros, the largest island in the Bahamas, about 1.6 km from the barrier reef. Shared and private charters from Nassau (Lynden Pindling International) fly to Andros Town/Fresh Creek and San Andros airports, from where a taxi booked by the concierge takes about 20 or 45 minutes respectively to the resort dock, followed by a ferry crossing of around 8 minutes. Miami and Fort Lauderdale are roughly 1–1.5 hours away by air, and seaplanes and helicopters can fly straight to the cay.

Spa

The Spa at Kamalame Cay stands over the water and is the only overwater spa in the Bahamas. Treatments use certified organic OSEA products built on seaweed and essential oils: facials, body exfoliations and wraps, Swedish, deep-tissue and hot-stone massage, couples’ massage, reflexology and longer combined rituals, all to the sound of the waves and with the ocean in view.

Sports & leisure

Ways to spend the day on and around the island:

  • kayaks and stand-up paddleboards at Little Beach and Sunset Beach, for exploring the shallows and mangrove creeks
  • a tennis court with rackets, balls and a ball machine, fat-tyre bicycles, masks and snorkels
  • a PADI dive centre on the marina dock: reef and blue-hole dives, Discover Scuba sessions and full certification courses
  • guided snorkelling, deep-sea fishing and bonefishing among coral gardens, coves and islets, with a picnic lunch on request
  • picnic hampers for the secluded north end of the cay and monthly open-air film nights at Cinema Paradiso
  • a marina with private slips for yachts of up to 20 m
For children

Families are welcome. Babysitting can be arranged through the concierge, the Great House and the Tiki Bar have children’s menus, and the dive centre runs Bubblemaker sessions in the heated pool for children from 8, as well as snorkelling outings suited to younger guests. Several villas are laid out with families in mind, among them Sip Sip with its bunk room.

Restaurants & bars

Menus change daily around local seafood and fowl, imported game and farm produce, with bread and pastries baked on the island; to protect the reef offshore, only mature, in-season seafood is served.

  • The Great House — the West Indies-style main dining room in a garden above the ocean, with an indoor room and a sand-floored terrace; breakfast, lunch and candlelit dinners
  • Tiki Bar & Beach Club — relaxed lunches from an outdoor kitchen and grill beside the pool and the beach
  • Monkey Bar — an intimate evening bar for wine, champagne and cocktails, styled in the spirit of the designer Tony Duquette
  • Sugar Cane, Sunset Beach and Cinema Paradiso — pop-up settings for drinks, sunset gatherings and outdoor films
  • The Luncheon — a long monthly lunch of several courses with paired wines, cocktails and dancing at the Great House or the Tiki Bar
Swimming

Nearly 5 km of private white-sand beach runs around the island, with quieter corners at Little Beach, Sunset Beach with its pink chairs and the palm-shaded north end. A heated freshwater pool sits beside the Tiki Bar. The water near the shore is shallow, and the reef begins about 1.6 km out.

Pets

The resort accepts pets, except in the Rock House One Bedroom Cottage and the Magnolia Three/Four Bedroom Villa, which are pet-free.
