Caerula Mar Club

About this hotel

General information

Caerula Mar Club is a small beach resort on the eastern shore of South Andros in the Bahamas, set on ten acres of oceanfront land at Driggs Hill. It was brought back to life from a club that had long stood neglected, and its buildings blend traditional island architecture with mid-century modern lines, natural and sustainable materials and generous open-air living space. Five private villas sit along the shore or among tropical planting, while the Clubhouse Suites are gathered at the centre of the resort, a short walk from the pool, the restaurant and the beach.

The mood is relaxed and barefoot, aimed at couples and families with older children: only children over ten are accepted, and there are no children’s programmes. Cooking built on island produce and sustainably sourced seafood is a draw in its own right, as is the proximity of blue holes, bonefishing flats and the Andros barrier reef. The resort closes every year from August to October; stays are two nights minimum, and longer over Christmas and New Year.

Location

The resort lies at Driggs Hill on the east coast of South Andros. Congo Town, the only airport on South Andros, is about ten minutes away by car, and the resort provides transfers in both directions. Domestic flights from Nassau take around 20 minutes and scheduled flights from Fort Lauderdale about an hour; private aircraft can land at the same airport, which has customs on site, and yachts can use Driggs Hill marina, under ten minutes from the resort. There is no ferry from Nassau, and no other restaurants within walking distance.

Spa

Wellness is low-key and mostly outdoors: massages, including a 60-minute Swedish massage, and spa rituals can be arranged, and mornings can begin with sunrise yoga or meditation facing the ocean.

Sports & leisure

Some activities are complimentary; the rest are arranged as guided outings.

  • Included in the stay — snorkel gear, paddleboards, kayaks, bicycles and Hobie Cat Wave catamarans.
  • Guided snorkelling and scuba diving, including Discover Scuba for beginners, on the Andros barrier reef, one of the longest in the world.
  • Bonefishing on the South Andros flats, reef fishing and deep-sea fishing.
  • A guided kayak trip through mangrove channels and a hike to inland blue holes for a swim.
  • Private crewed boat charters, a castaway day on a secluded beach with paddleboards, a 90-minute evening cruise along the coast and jet skis.
For children

Children over ten are welcome. There is no kids’ club, childcare, lifeguard or recreational programme. The two-queen Clubhouse Suites and the one-bedroom villas, which sleep four, are the best fit for families.

Restaurants & bars

Three venues cover the day, and dinner can also be set up on the beach or elsewhere in the grounds.

  • Lusca — the main restaurant in the Clubhouse, serving breakfast and dinner, with two- or three-course menus written daily around island produce and sustainably sourced seafood.
  • Driffs — a poolside beach bar for lunch, sunset cocktails and light dishes late into the evening.
  • Switcha Café — coffee, smoothies, pastries and light bites from early morning to early afternoon.

The resort is not all-inclusive: dining is à la carte, with an optional dining plan covering breakfast, lunch and three-course dinners. The Chef’s Table, a private four-course dinner for two, is served on the wellness deck.

Swimming

The resort faces a long, quiet beach on the ocean side of South Andros, good for swimming, walks and beachcombing, with miles of untouched coastline beyond. By the Clubhouse there is a swimming pool with loungers, umbrellas and a bar.

Pets

Pets are not allowed in guest accommodation.
