Hotel Sacher Salzburg

About this hotel

General information

Hotel Sacher Salzburg is a family-owned five-star superior hotel set right on the bank of the Salzach, facing the UNESCO-listed Old Town and Hohensalzburg Fortress. It first opened in 1866 as the Österreichischer Hof and took its present name in 2000, and it remains the only historic grand hotel in the city.

Its 110 rooms and suites were designed by co-owner Alexandra Winkler with the French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, each furnished individually with antiques, paintings and marble bathrooms; royalty, heads of state and well-known names have stayed in the suites for more than a century. Dining centres on the Zirbelzimmer and the Sacher Grill, with a coffee house serving the Original Sacher-Torte and a bar whose terrace sits above the river. A light-filled winter garden and several historic rooms host dinners, meetings and weddings, and a concierge team is on hand around the clock.

Location

The hotel stands at Schwarzstrasse 5–7 on the Salzach embankment, a short walk from the Old Town, Mozart’s birthplace, the Mirabell Gardens and the Salzburg Festival venues. Buses 1, 3, 5 and 6 stop at nearby Makartplatz, and Salzburg Airport is 15–20 minutes away; city buses, taxis or the hotel’s limousine connect it with the airport and the main railway station.

Spa

The Sacher Health Club is a compact wellness area for hotel guests, with a modern fitness room, a sauna and a steam bath. Massages are available, including treatments devised for children and teenagers, and the club opens daily on request.

Sports & leisure

The Health Club’s fitness room has up-to-date equipment, and sessions with a personal trainer can be booked. The concierge team helps plan time in the city, where Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mozart’s birthplace, the Mirabell Gardens and Salzburg Festival performances are all within easy walking distance.

For children

The Petit Sacher programme greets young guests with a welcome gift and a “My Hotel Sacher” booklet for exploring the house, and every restaurant has a children’s menu. Children receive their own bathrobe, slippers and bath set, a bedtime treat at turndown, board games and family films, with a cot or extra bed on request. Babysitting can be arranged, and the concierge supplies bottle warmers, high chairs, baby monitors and more. Family Suites sleep up to seven.

Restaurants & bars

The kitchens are rooted in Austrian classics, the wine list runs to more than 350 labels, and room service is available around the clock.

  • Zirbelzimmer — Gault&Millau-recognised fine dining in a room kept as it was in 1866, with dishes carved and flambéed at the table and a summer terrace facing the fortress
  • Sacher Grill — a contemporary grill under chef Michael Gahleitner, with the Jedermann Wall, a long communal Kuchltisch and a terrace on the Salzach; the SalzBurger, fish and Wiener Schnitzel
  • Café Sacher Salzburg — a Viennese-style coffee house for Sacher-Torte, Kaiserschmarrn and Buchteln, breakfast until 11 am and Austrian dishes at lunch and dinner
  • Sacher Bar — a red-toned American bar with a waterside terrace, seasonal cocktails, champagnes and a bar menu
  • Sacher Buffet Breakfast — the morning buffet
Pets

Dogs are welcome: rooms are set up with a basket, blanket, towels and bowls, and leads and walking bags are available at reception. There is a dedicated pet’s room-service menu and a “do not disturb” sign for the dog, dog sitters can be arranged on request, and Café Sacher Salzburg is pet-friendly too.
