About this hotel
General information
Palais Coburg rises from the remains of Vienna’s Renaissance fortifications, on the Braunbastei bastion, where Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg had a stately residence built between 1840 and 1845 to designs by Karl Schleps. Because building began so early, the old casemates survived beneath it, and the free-standing columns of its central projection earned the late-classical palace the Viennese nickname “Spargelburg”, the asparagus castle.
The POK Pühringer Private Foundation acquired and restored the palace from 1997, and it opened as a hotel residence in 2003. Following a thorough renovation it now runs as a private guesthouse of 36 suites behind listed walls, where every table is reserved in advance. Its two great assets are the two-Michelin-star Silvio Nickol Gourmet Restaurant and a wine archive of more than 60,000 bottles laid down in six historic cellars.
Location
The palace stands at Coburgbastei 4 in Vienna’s 1st District, beside the Ringstrasse and a few minutes’ walk from Stephansplatz, with the Stephansplatz (U1) and Stubentor (U3) Underground stations and a tram 2 stop close by. Vienna International Airport is about 20 km away, and the hotel can arrange a transfer by fully electric Mercedes-Benz limousine; the central station is around 10 minutes by taxi. Valet parking uses a secure underground car park with an EV charging point.
Spa
The spa occupies the third floor: a 9 × 4 m indoor pool at 27°C with counter-current swimming, a 13°C plunge pool, a Finnish sauna and a steam bath, and a bright winter garden that opens onto a sun terrace overlooking the city and the Stadtpark. The redesigned treatment rooms offer massages, facials and signature rituals, and there is a quiet yoga studio. Hotel guests may ask to use the spa and gym outside regular hours.
Sports & leisure
The redesigned gym lies in the calm of the lower ground floor with direct access to the garden, equipped with rowing machines, bikes, cross-trainers, treadmills and a free-weights area; yoga has its own studio in the spa. Down in the vaults, guided cellar tours end with a tasting, and private tours can be tailored on request. The hotel also keeps a curated list of Viennese outings, from the Albertina, the Belvedere and the Hofburg to walks on the Danube Island and evenings in the wine taverns of Grinzing.
For children
The Multi-Bedroom Suites are designed with families in mind, and several suites connect to their neighbours. The hotel’s list of Vienna outings flags family-friendly choices such as the House of the Sea aquarium, the Liliput Railway in the Prater and the Schönbrunn maze.
