EOLO – Patagonia's Spirit

About this hotel

General information

EOLO is a seventeen-room lodge set alone in the Patagonian steppe, on an estancia of some 4,000 hectares between El Calafate and the Perito Moreno glacier. The building is the work of architect Fernando Bustillo, grandson of Alejandro Bustillo, who designed the Llao Llao in Bariloche. It draws on the creole country house, Indigenous references and contemporary architecture, and every space turns towards a central garden that shelters the lodge from the Patagonian wind. Each room and lounge looks out to open country, and the interiors are kept as spare as the landscape. EOLO is a member of Relais & Châteaux.

The lodge opens from October to April and works on an all-inclusive basis: all meals, wines, alcoholic and soft drinks, shared transfers from El Calafate airport and the guided riding, walking and cycling on the estancia are part of the stay. The minimum age is 12, to keep the atmosphere quiet. EOLO suggests at least three nights, and ideally four, to see the region properly.

Location

The lodge lies in the steppe of Santa Cruz province, roughly halfway between El Calafate and Los Glaciares National Park: around 30 minutes from town, 50 minutes from the Perito Moreno glacier and about an hour from El Calafate airport, which is three hours’ flying from Buenos Aires, an hour and a half from Bariloche and an hour from Ushuaia. El Chaltén is 2.5 hours away by road, Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park five. Airport transfers are included and shared with other guests on the same flight.

Spa

There is no spa as such; instead a relaxation area offers a dry sauna, a steam room, an outdoor jacuzzi and a massage room.

Sports & leisure

The lodge’s own guide leads the outings on the estancia, which are included; excursions beyond it are arranged separately.

  • on the estancia – trekking, mountain biking, horse riding, birdwatching, 4×4 drives and a canopy (zip-line) circuit
  • Perito Moreno glacier – the walkways and viewpoints, a short boat trip along the ice front, and shorter or longer treks on the ice with crampons
  • Lago Argentino – boat trips through the icebergs to the Upsala glacier, kayaking, trekking, 4×4 drives and visits to old estancias
  • El Chaltén – day hikes with views of Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre
  • fly fishing and a tour of El Calafate
For children

The lodge welcomes guests aged 12 and over.

Restaurants & bars

The restaurant pairs European technique with Patagonian produce through the day: breakfast at sunrise, lunch with the view, afternoon tea with a choice of blends and pastries, then dinner. The wine list is drawn entirely from Argentine wineries. The bar is where guests gather before and after dinner to trade stories of the day. All meals and drinks, wine included, are part of the stay, and vegetarian or other special menus are prepared with advance notice.
