About this hotel
General information
Awasi Mendoza is a wine lodge in the heart of Luján de Cuyo, Argentina’s best-known Malbec sub-region. Seventeen private villas and rooms are spread across a 22-hectare vineyard at the foot of the Andes, in buildings inspired by Spanish colonial architecture and turned so that their terraces face the snow-capped peaks and the vines. The cellar holds wines from local producers and from across the country, and some of the wine is made on the estate itself. The lodge is a member of Relais & Châteaux.
As at every Awasi lodge, each room is assigned its own guide and 4×4 vehicle, and the days are planned around the guest, who fills in a questionnaire on interests, fitness and dietary needs before arrival. There are two ways to stay. Fully Hosted covers everything — accommodation, meals, private excursions and return airport transfers. The B&B option also includes transfers, together with a tasting with the sommelier in the cellar, use of the sauna and jacuzzi in the spa, and bicycles for riding around the estate.
Location
The lodge lies in Agrelo, in the Luján de Cuyo department of Mendoza province, 2 km down a dirt road off Route 7, the road to Chile. Mendoza city is about half an hour to the north and Governor Francisco Gabrielli International Airport (MDZ) about 40 minutes away; the lodge’s guides meet guests at the airport. Flights from Buenos Aires take under two hours, and from Santiago the lodge can be reached overland over the Los Libertadores Pass, a private transfer of three to four hours across the Andes.
Spa
Awasi Mendoza Spa has two couples’ treatment rooms, a wine-bath area, a jacuzzi and a sauna. Treatments use local products, grape-seed extract among them, and the menu includes a spa treatment with wine.
Sports & leisure
Every outing is private and planned with the guide around the guests’ interests and fitness, pairing wine with the mountains and with time outdoors. The lodge offers, among other things:
- winery visits in Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley, from family estates with century-old vines to contemporary cellars, often with lunch at the winery’s restaurant
- a tasting with the sommelier in the lodge’s cellar
- a full-day trek in Aconcagua Provincial Park from Horcones Lagoon (2,950 m) up the Horcones River valley, with views of Aconcagua’s south face
- a hike at Vallecitos, where the summits reach 3,000–3,500 m
- Condor Lookout Trail — half-day and full-day routes in a private Andean reserve 1.5 hours from the lodge
- rafting on the Mendoza River (class II+ / III+)
- cycling on flat roads through the vineyards with stops at the Decero and Ojo de Agua wineries, a 30 km e-bike route, and a ride of about 12 km around Lake Potrerillos ending with a picnic
- sailing on the lake for 1.5 or 3 hours
- horse riding through the vineyards, and a ride into the Andean foothills from a family ranch on the Camino de la Carrera, finishing with an asado
- a cooking class: empanadas, ojo de bife, tomaticán, and grilled vegetables and fruit
- golf on the 18-hole Club de Campo course (30 minutes) and the 9-hole La Vacherie course with Andes views (20 minutes)
- in March–April, the vendimia harvest celebration — hand-picking grapes, music, folk dancing and dinner among the vines; in season, the olive harvest and a tasting of the estate’s own olive oil
For children
Children aged 14 and over are welcome; families with younger children are asked to contact the reservations team in advance. The Two Bedroom Villa sleeps a family of up to four.
Restaurants & bars
The lodge’s restaurant looks out over the vineyards and works farm to table: the chef cooks with seasonal organic produce from the estate’s own garden, and dishes are matched with the estate’s wines and others from the region. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes are always on the menu. The chef also runs cooking workshops, and excursions come with a picnic or lunch at the lodge or at a winery. Dinners at the lodge are accompanied by live music, tango or jazz.
Swimming
There is no shared pool; instead every villa and room has its own plunge pool by the terrace, and the villas add an outdoor jacuzzi.
