About this hotel
General information
Awasi Iguazú is a small lodge of fourteen stand-alone villas in the Atlantic Rainforest, on the banks of the Iguazú River and close to the Iguazú Falls. The villas are spread through the jungle so that each is fully private, linked to the main lodge by stone walkways, and the standard villas stand on stilts to keep their footprint on the forest floor light. Next to Iguazú National Park, Awasi protects 145 hectares of virgin forest open only to its guests and works with local organisations that rescue, rehabilitate and reintroduce native wildlife. Toucans, parrots, hummingbirds, monkeys and coatis are everyday company. The lodge is a member of Relais & Châteaux.
Privacy shapes the Awasi stay: every villa has its own guide and 4×4 vehicle, so all outings are private and each day is planned around the guests’ interests and pace. Rates cover the private excursions, the lodge’s cuisine and private transfers from Puerto Iguazú and Foz do Iguaçu airports. The minimum age is 14.
Location
The lodge lies in Misiones province in north-eastern Argentina, on the Iguazú River near the point where Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay meet. It sits outside Iguazú National Park, 15 minutes’ drive from the falls. Puerto Iguazú airport is 20 km away (about 30 minutes), Brazil’s Foz do Iguaçu airport 17 km (about 45 minutes including the border crossing) and Posadas airport 310 km, roughly four hours by road. Direct flights connect Buenos Aires with Puerto Iguazú daily in around two hours. Private transfers to and from Puerto Iguazú and Foz do Iguaçu airports are included.
Sports & leisure
Every outing is private, led by the villa’s guide in a 4×4, with length and difficulty matched to the guests. Options include:
- the Argentine side of the Iguazú Falls – the Upper and Lower Circuits past the San Martín, Bossetti and Dos Hermanas falls, and the walkways to the Devil’s Throat
- the Brazilian side – a 1.5 km panoramic walkway, or 12 km by bike from the park entrance
- quieter corners of Iguazú National Park – the Macuco Trail (3.5 km of jungle to the 20-metre Arrechea waterfall and its natural pool) and the El Ñandú bike route to the river behind the Devil’s Throat
- by boat from the lodge’s own landing – up the Paraná to the hidden Yasy Fall and Awasi’s floating deck for kayaking; to the confluence of the Iguazú and Paraná at the Triple Frontier with kayaks or paddleboards; across the border to Paraguay’s Monday waterfall
- the 17th- and 18th-century Jesuit mission ruins, the Mbya Guaraní community and its crafts and plant lore, and a yerba mate drying mill
- a hummingbird garden 10 minutes from the lodge, the Güirá Oga wildlife rescue centre, the Puerto Península and Urugua-í provincial parks, and the Teyú Cuaré reserve above the Paraná
- horse riding through the rainforest, birdwatching, and the Treenets – nets strung among the treetops above the Iguazú River for resting and watching the canopy
For children
Children are welcome from the age of 14; for a stay with younger children, the reservations team should be contacted in advance.
