About this hotel

General information

Curtain Bluff occupies a rocky headland on Antigua’s south coast, close to the village of Old Road. The low bluff that gives the resort its name splits some 20 acres (about 8 ha) into two beaches — a calm bay beach and a livelier surf beach — and the grounds look out over forested hills towards Montserrat, Guadeloupe and Redonda. There are 72 rooms and suites, each set on the sand or a few steps from it. Curtain Bluff is a member of Relais & Châteaux.

The resort has welcomed guests since 1962, when it opened with 22 rooms, and has grown gradually without losing its intimate scale; a large share of guests return year after year. The rate is all-inclusive, covering all meals and drinks — alcohol by the glass, the minibar and room service among them — as well as water sports, tennis, squash, the gym, yoga and Pilates. The spa, tennis lessons, diving and cellar wines by the bottle are charged separately. At the request of its regulars there are no televisions in the rooms, and the resort supports its own charity, the Old Road Fund, for the neighbouring village.

Location

The resort sits on a peninsula at the southern tip of Antigua, in the parish of St Mary, next to the village of Old Road. V. C. Bird International Airport, on the island’s north-east corner, is about half an hour away by car, and one of the resort’s two Bentleys can be reserved in advance for the airport transfer.

Spa

The spa, around 465 m² in size, stands apart from the rest of the resort just a few metres from the sea, and its four treatment rooms face Montserrat, Redonda and Cades Reef. Treatments begin with a tea of herbs from the spa garden on the terrace and can end in a soaking tub set on the cliff above the water. The menu covers Swedish, shiatsu and deep-tissue massage, couples’ massages, body polishes, herbal aromatherapy wraps, facials, manicures, pedicures and waxing, with a beauty salon alongside. Next to the spa is an adults-only wellness area with a yoga deck over the sea.

Sports & leisure
  • Tennis centre — four championship hard courts lit for night play, a pro shop and resident coaches (lessons at extra cost).
  • An air-conditioned squash court, pickleball, bocce and shuffleboard.
  • A gym with cardio and weight machines; scheduled yoga, Pilates and aqua aerobics, morning power walks through the village, garden and nursery tours, and hikes from sea level to the hilltops.
  • Included water sports: waterskiing and wakeboarding with boat and instructor, Hobie Cats, pedalos, kayaks, windsurfing, paddleboarding, towed tubing and twice-daily snorkelling trips to Cades Reef.
  • Diving at extra cost: PADI Discover Scuba Diving, dives for certified divers and the open-water portion of the PADI course, all on Cades Reef, the closest reef to the resort.
  • At extra cost, Caribbean cooking classes with the chefs and tastings in the wine cellar.
For children

Cee Bee Kids Camp takes children aged 3–10; it sits under the palms on the calm-water beach and runs five days a week, six over peak holidays. The daily programme ranges from crafts to crab races, with a shaded sandpit and climbing frame for the youngest and, for older children, a games room with board and computer games plus a separate children’s computer room; a creative camp and children’s tennis clinics run on certain dates. Older children can sail Hobie Cats, snorkel and waterski. Families can dine early at 6 pm on the Tamarind terrace, and babysitters are available for hire. Children under 6 are not accepted in the One Bedroom Bluff Suite (or its two-bedroom version), and dinner at the Sea Grape is for guests aged 13 and over.

Restaurants & bars

All meals are included: breakfast and lunch are buffets, dinner is à la carte and booked in advance, and evenings follow a smart dress code.

  • The Tamarind Restaurant — breakfast, then a changing five-course dinner menu built around local fish, served beneath a spreading tamarind tree, with dancing to live music on the terrace afterwards.
  • The Sea Grape — an open-air restaurant on the sand at the far end of the bay beach, with a buffet lunch, a weekly beach barbecue with a steel band and, several nights a week, Italian-Antiguan dinners for guests aged 13 and over.
  • The Wine Cellar — more than 25,000 bottles chosen by the sommelier team, with tastings held in the cellar.
  • Sugar Mill Bar — open daily from morning until late, with sandwiches and salads at lunchtime.
  • Seagrape Bar — a beach bar open until sunset.

During the day bento boxes are brought to beach cabanas or the pool, and afternoon tea is served in the library overlooking the gardens.

Swimming

The headland divides the resort into two beaches: the calm bay beach, home to the kids’ camp and the Sea Grape, and the surf beach, where most of the rooms are found. Both have loungers, hammocks, sun floats and cabanas, with a beach concierge on hand, and the sargassum seaweed that reaches the island’s north and east coasts does not affect this side. There is a pool with two 23-metre lap lanes, a separate adults-only pool with daybeds and views of Montserrat, and the Pool Suites have private plunge pools.

Rooms

The 72 rooms and suites fall into three groups: Beach Front Rooms on the surf beach, Rooms on the Bluff on the headland and Pool Suites with private plunge pools. Interiors are light and coastal, with natural wood, marble and Caribbean touches.
